When USB cables started going mainstream in replacement of conventional plugs; giving your battery that extra juice it needed to get you through the day suddenly became a much more convenient task. There was no more carrying around a chunky plug that would scratch everything else inside your bag, just a simple, short cable that could be easily folded away in to a bag’s pocket or briefcase compartment.
For designer Min-Kyu Choi though, that wasn’t enough. He felt frustrated at the lack of development in traditional plugs and wound up designing an award winning product (Gold Medal in the International Design Excellence award); the MU Foldable Plug.
Impressive Design
The MU Plug is basically a small foldable plug that at it’s most compact form, is almost unnoticeable in your pocket. You simply have to open the side flaps and twist the prongs to turn it in to a 3-pin plug. The USB port is universal and can charge any USB powered devices – although it doesn’t pack enough power to quickly fill up something more demanding like a tablet. It can be done, but it’ll take time.
Although a few of the people I’ve shown this to have looked at the MU Plug and say “it’s just a plug” – once they see just how compact it can become and its versatility they’re already sold. It simply has a ‘cool factor’ to it that makes you say “I want it”.
Is It Worth The Cost?
Of course, for plenty of people it’s likely that they’ll have access to a USB port, on a computer for example, where they can charge up their device. So why spend the £25 asking price on a foldable plug?
Well, for someone who commutes a lot, the MU Plug is the kind of gadget that’ll be conveniently subtle in a bag or briefcase, and at least for now, it should hold you back from cursing the tech giants that still haven’t figured out how to extend battery lives too.
MU Foldable Plug: The Bottom Line
Given that we’re living in a technology-filled world where everything is becoming power-hungry, the MU Portable Plug is a beautiful and effective piece of design that will be a godsend when you end up needing that battery boost in the middle of your day.
Besides, if nothing else, at least you’ll be glad that it’s one of the coolest gadgets you own.
