WD Launches My Passport Wireless: A Wireless Hard Drive With Up To 2TB Of Storage

Western Digital make some really great portable hard drives, and particularly with their most recent My Passport Pro — a Thunderbolt drive targeted at creative professionals — I was really impressed by the solid build and speedy performance on offer.

Today was the UK unveiling of their newest addition to the lineup: the My Passport Wireless. Aesthetically it carries a very familiar design to the aforementioned My Passport Pro, but this is essentially a portable USB 3.0 hard drive that allows up to 8 devices to connect via Wi-Fi, accessing the 500GB, 1TB or 2TB storage on board – depending of course on which one you go for.

Thanks to its use of Wireless N technology, users will be able to stream up to 4 HD videos at the same time, and the in-built rechargeable battery provides a modest 6 hours of constant use, with 20 hours of standby time.

Paired up with the My Cloud app for iOS & Android (which I took a look at during the My Cloud NAS drive review), users can access both their WD My Cloud drive and the My Passport Wireless itself, along with a range of other cloud services like Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive, all via in a single app.

The My Passport Wireless also features an integrated SD card slot, making it possible to transfer photos, music and videos from a digital camera on to the drive. To top that off, WD have also included integrated FTP which effectively allows digital cameras to transfer their data automatically on to the My Passport Wireless while they’re taking them.

Price & Availability

The My Passport Wireless drive is currently available at select UK retailers and online at the wdstore. You can pick up the 500GB model for £109, the 1TB for £129 and the largest 2TB model for £199.00.
