This app will get you insured on a friend’s car in minutes

I’ve always been annoyed at the difficulty involved in getting insured on someone else’s car here in the UK. You either have to plough through long online forms, or spend time listening to terrible music while you wait for a call centre agent. It’s so impractical and time wasting.

I’ve always been annoyed at the difficulty involved in getting insured on someone else’s car here in the UK. You either have to plough through long online forms, or spend time listening to terrible music while you wait for a call centre agent. It’s so impractical and time wasting.

Cuvva is a startup trying to make temporary car insurance easy with an iOS app that allows you to get car insurance within minutes.

The signup process takes about 1-2 minutes to complete, and you’ll need to enter your drivers license information, take a selfie and photo of your license. You’ll also need to allow the app to access your location, so that it can give you quotes based on where you are. All of this information is then matched up to the DVLA database for security purposes.

Once that’s done and you’re ready to get a quote, enter the license plate of the car you want to drive along with the car’s value, and Cuvva gives you a range of pricing options ranging from an hour to a full day’s insurance. To complete the process you’ll just need to take a photo of the front of the car and you’re good to drive away.

Cuvva will then provide you with the insurance documents you’ll need (in case you need to show police officers for example) and information about your temporary policy. All in all it’s a really simple process.

I tested my sister’s car for a 24 hour period and only paid £24 — although prices will vary based on age, car value, location and other factors.

You need to be 21 in order to use Cuvva, and the service is currently limited to the UK although with this level of convenience I can see them expanding into other places and fast. They’re also regulated by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority.

Would you use Cuvva?

Personally, I’ll probably start using Cuvva going forward. In my first experience it felt incredibly simple, reasonably priced and very fast too.

What are your thoughts on Cuvva? Would you use it? Let me know in the comments!
