Sifting through endless amounts of mail isn’t fun, and having to navigate the main OS X menu bar to archive something each time makes it an even more daunting task. The Mail client on Mac doesn’t have a dedicated keyboard shortcut for archiving, so after getting used to that functionality on other mail clients, I decided to configure my own little shortcut for the Mail client on Mac OS X.
If you want a way to quickly and easily archive mail with the press of a button (or two, or three), here’s how:
- Head over to your System Preferences, either via Spotlight or just click on the Apple logo on the top left of the screen.
- Under System Preferences, click on the Keyboard category.
- Click on the Shortcuts tab.
- Now select the App Shortcuts category, found under the left column.
- Click on the +, at the bottom of that column.
- From the Application: menu, select Mail.
- Under Menu Title, type: Archive.
- In the Keyboard Shortcut field, type in the keyboard shortcut you’d like to use. Since Command + A selects all the emails in your inbox, I used Command + Shift + A, but feel free to use whatever suits you.
- Click on Add and close the window.
